I must have been living under a rock because I just recently learned about balayage effect — a coloring technique that is easier and more natural than normal highlights (it’s done freehand instead of with foils). It’s how you get the ombre effect on hair, but it can be done in highlight form, too. I love, love the look! A few weeks ago I decided to give it a try (I started with a half head instead of a full head). The results are really natural, sun-kissed look that gave me just the right amount of dimension and color. I may go bolder and do a full head next time, but one of the amazing things about balayage is that you don’t have to get it re-done very often (or ever, if you don’t want to). It grows out really naturally since it’s less extreme than normal highlights. It really is the best of everything! I’m curious, have you ever had balayage done to your hair?
P.S. Over the weekend I guest posted on Becca’s blog about my favorites for fall! Check it out here.
I love this look and didn’t know the name either! I just called it ombre hair:0 I bet yours looks great! Mine is way too blonde to pull it off but i love the idea!
Neither did I! That’s exactly the look I want to have! I’ve been blond for ages and that means I need to go and get the roots coloured at least once a month. Anyway i’d love to get my natural colour back, maybe that’s a solution – a professional hairdresser knows!
I just called it ombre hair too-the b word is too technical! But I’m going to let you in on a little secret- I have virgin hair! As in, never colored or highlighted EVER. I know it’s crazy, but it is true. I just can’t bring myself to do it, I’m too scared I won’t get my natural color back and I am HORRIBLE about going for haircuts. I could never keep up with coloring my hair! But if I did, it would be balayage or whatever that word is! haha
Oh really? I love this look and I love the fact that is not high maintenance, got to write the name of it for my next trip to the hair salon ;)
ooh i just learned a new word today – i was totally calling it reverse ombre! love love that look.
haha! I had no idea what it was called. I just call it ombre..which is obvi wrong. I have really been considering getting balayage but I haven’t colored my hair in YEARS so am afraid!!
Apparently I’ve been living under that same rock as well, because this is the first I’ve heard of the effect. But if it’s what these ladies are using… I approve!

I am dying over all of the fall faves! And I’ve heard of the ombre look. Scared to try it myself!
Love this look!! You need to show us yours!! Maybe I’ll do that when I finally go get my hair done!
This is super gorgeous. Love the natural effect! I haven’t processed my hair in eons but if anything I would give this a go. Let’s see how yours turned out (:
I did this to my hair last fall and it still looks the same on me a year later- very long-lasting.

I really love this hair effect – I’m a blonde though so I’d probably only do it if I was a natural brunette.

I’m literally seeing this trend everywhere… and especially on celebrities. I’d probably look ridiculous sporting this hair trend but hey – maybe I should try it!
I actually tried this a few months ago. I loved it for awhile but then I really missed seeing the bright highlights around my face so I went back to the normal highllighted look. It’s a fun and easy/nondrastic change though and I think it looks better on brunettes such as yourself.
New fan and follower right hurr!

I absolutely love this look. I have never dyed my hair though so I would probably never do it. I’ll have to settle for admiring it on others! Want to see a picture!
